Why Some Homes Raise Readers — and Others Don’t

When people see children who love reading, they often assume it happened naturally. They imagine those children were simply born that way, or that their parents did something extraordinary.

I used to believe that too.

But over time, watching my own children grow, I began to see something much quieter and much more hopeful. A love of reading isn’t something children either have or don’t have. It is something that is formed — gently, gradually, and very much within our influence as parents.

The homes that raise readers aren’t different because of who their children are. They’re different because of what they make normal.
